Conchas de Vieria embroidery completed whilst as an Artist in Residence at Córtex Frontal, Portugal. Painted ink, cotton and wool yarns on a Portuguese linen, all sourced locally whilst I was in Portugal.

The piece is a colour and technique study, with the layout inspired by a stunning 16th century tiles from Seville at the Museu Berardo Estremoz and a beautiful Conchas de Vieria at Studio Gamerio, Lisbon Lapa apartment.

The Conchas de Vieria is known as a symbol of pilgrimage and appears in art and architecture along pilgrim the routes for centuries.

The Conchas de Vieria is said to represent the journey of the pilgrim, with its many grooves and ridges suggesting the different paths that can be taken in life.

This motif resonated deeply with me whilst at the residency on my own creative adventure.
